Lost Money in a UPI Fraud? What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Call 1930, report on cybercrime.gov.in and inform your bank. Why speed matters and what evidence to keep.

If money has left your account through a fraudulent UPI request, a fake customer-care call or a phishing link, the first few hours matter most. Quick reporting gives the bank and the police more time to freeze the funds before they are moved on.

Immediately

  1. Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930, or report at cybercrime.gov.in.
  2. Inform your bank through its official helpline or app and ask it to block the account, card or UPI ID.
  3. Note the complaint or acknowledgement numbers you receive.

Evidence to preserve

  • Transaction IDs (UTR numbers), dates and times
  • Screenshots of messages, calls, links and payment requests
  • The fraudster’s phone number, UPI ID or website address
  • Your bank statement showing the debit

Your liability under RBI rules

RBI rules on unauthorised electronic transactions provide that if you were not at fault and you report the transaction to your bank within three working days, your liability can be zero. Delayed reporting, or negligence such as sharing an OTP, can change this. Report in writing and keep the acknowledgement.

Do not delete messages or uninstall apps used in the fraud. They are evidence.
